RESEARCH STUDY #2 In Little Neck NY
In part 1 of this blog series, we chatted about the 1st of the 10 federally funded research studies backing Cox Technic flexion distraction and spinal decompression. Today we're going to talk about the 2nd one federally funded study, which was conducted again, under the guidance of Dr Gudavalli, and was initially published in 2005.
According to Cox Technic's website, This particular study was done with the National University of Health Sciences and the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine.
In this randomized clinical trial and subgroup analysis, researchers compared clinical outcomes for low back pain treatment with flexion-distraction technique (aka Cox Technic) under chiropractic care, to low back pain treated with active exercise via medical physical therapy treatment. Participants within the study were randomly assigned the treatment method for their low back pain.
According to (Gudavelli et. al., 2006), "study patients perceived significantly less pain and better function after intervention, regardless of which group they were allocated to. Subjects randomly allocated to the flexion-distraction group had significantly greater relief from pain than those allocated to the exercise program."
From this study, we learned that from a research perspective, both forms of treatment can help with low back pain, but we also learned that flexion distraction (aka Cox Technic) brings "significantly greater relief" when compared to low back pain treatment with active exercise.
In addition, research reported that the subgroup analysis portion of this study "indicated that subjects categorized as chronic, with moderate to severe symptoms, improved most with the flexion-distraction protocol", along with the fact that "subjects categorized with recurrent pain and moderate to severe symptoms improved most with the exercise program", and finally that "patients with radiculopathy did significantly better with flexion distraction".
These findings show us that every patient is different. While Dr. Jacobs is highly confident that Cox Technic can help most people with their individual spinal needs, from his 27 years of clinical experience and from Cox Technic's highly research-driven nature, there is not a one-size-fits-all low back pain treatment plan for every human on this planet - which is why treatment at Care Chiropractic often not only involves Cox Technic Flexion Distraction, but also often involves active exercise techniques, similar to those performed in this study, based on a patient's specific needs.
